What is Airtel Smart Trybe Tariff Plan?

Smart Trybe is a prepaid tariff plan that allows you to make calls to all local networks in Nigeria at a very cheap rate. Though, there is a small catch that involves you paying a bit more for the first 50 seconds.

But after the talk time calculations, I think you will agree with me that at the end of the day, this is one of the cheapest call plans on the airtel network at the moment.

A cheap local call rate isn’t the only thing this plan has to offer. It also gives you the privilege to purchase 1.5GB of data for 500 Naira which is an offer that isn’t available on most of the call plans.

Also, it is the only plan on which airtel mid-night plan which gives 250MB for 25 Naira is usable and it is valid from 12 AM to 5 AM.

There is also a campus bonus that can only be used on or near campuses which can be as low as 225MB for a 500 Naira weekly plan and as high as 1.5GB for a 2500 Naira monthly plan.

Airtel Smart Trybe Call Rate

25 Kobo per second for the first 50 seconds call of the day and 11 K/sec after that for the rest of the day.

Let’s do some Talktime calculations to find out how long it will take you to exhaust the different values of airtime recharge with the above rates.

First, let’s convert those rates to naira per minute.

First 50 seconds;

25 kobo – 1 second
X – 50 seconds

X = 1250 kobo

But,

1 Naira – 100 Kobo
X – 1250 kobo

Rate = 1250 / 100 = 12.5 Naira for the first 50 seconds.

For the rest of the day;

11 kobo – 1 second
X – 60 seconds

X = 660 kobo

But,

1 Naira – 100 kobo
X = 660 kobo

Rate = 660 / 100 = 6.6 Naira per minute.

Now, let’s calculate the Talktime for 100 up to 1000 Naira airtime recharge value.

Airtel Smart Trybe Talk Time Calculations

100 Naira Recharge

First 50 secs: 12.5 Naira
Remaining: 100 – 12.5 Naira = 87.5 / 6.6 = 13.26 minutes

Talk Time = 13.26 minutes + 50 seconds (0.833 minutes) = 14 minutes 5 seconds.

200 Naira Airtime

First 50 seconds: 12.5 Naira
Remaining: 200 – 12.5 = 187.5 / 6.6 = 28.41 minutes

Talk Time = 28.41 + 50 seconds (0.833 minutes) = 29 minutes 14 seconds.

300 Naira Airtime Recharge

First 50 seconds: 12.5 Naira
Remaining: 300 – 12.5 = 287.5 / 6.6 = 43.56 minutes

Talk Time = 43.56 minutes + 50 seconds (0.833) = 44 minutes 23 seconds

500 Naira Airtime

First 50 seconds: 12.5 Naira
Balance: 500 – 12.5 = 487.5 / 6.6 = 73.86 minutes

Talk Time = 74 minutes 42 seconds

1000 Naira Recharge

First 50 seconds: 12.5 Naira
Balance: 1000 – 12.5 = 987.5 / 6.6 = 149.6 minutes

Talk Time = 149.6 + 50 seconds = 150 minutes 27 seconds

However, if we assume it will take you 2 days to use the 1000 Naira airtime, the cumulative of the first 50 seconds (1.666 minutes) for 2 days will be 12.5 x 2 = 25 Naira.

The Balance will be 1000 – 25 = 975 Naira.

Talk Time = 975 / 6.6 + 1.666 minutes = 147.73 + 1.666 = 149 minutes 24 seconds.

That’s just less than a minute difference from when you use the whole airtime in a single day.

The above call rate and Talktime calculations are based on the assumption that you used the entire airtime in a single day with the exception of the 1000 Naira airtime top-up which we also calculate for 2 days.

As you can from the above calculations, airtel smart Trybe allows you to talk for more than 14 minutes with 100 Naira airtime.

That, without any doubt, makes it one of the cheapest call plans on the network and that is possible even without any recharge bonus.

There used to be a free midnight call from 12 am to 5 am on smart trybe but that offer is no more available.
