MTN Tariff Plans For Data and Calls

If you are looking for the top mtn tariff plans for data and calls (local and International) that you can migrate to right now, this is exactly what you need. Relax and read to the end.

Here is how this is going to work. I will start with the top tariffs for data and then end with the ones for calls. I will touch on their benefits, migration code, and all other necessary details.

MTN Tariff Plans for Data

1.) MTN Yafun Yafun

This is the default plan for all new mtn sim cards and it comes with mouth-watering offers from a recharge bonus to an activation bonus and a 100% data bonus.

I will be focusing on the data benefits in this write-up but I have written extensively about MTN yafun yafun plan, so you can check it out to know about its full benefits.

One thing about this plan is that you can only be on it for as long as 6 months. If you don’t migrate before then, mtn will do it for you automatically to MTN Beta Talk (which is not a good plan by any means at the moment).

As for the 100% data bonus, you will receive it on any data bundles you buy from the lowest available plan up to the 5000 Naira plan for 4 (four) months.

The good thing is that you get the bonus every time you buy the eligible data bundles. So, enjoy it while it lasts.

2.) MTN Pulse data

This is the oldest and most feature-rich mtn call plan ever. There are just tonnes of benefits for you to enjoy but I will focus on the data benefits. Text 406 to 131 to migrate.

There are actually 6 data benefits that can be placed into three (3) different categories.

Category 1: Pulse Special

  • i.) N300 for 750MB: This is more than any other plans will offer you on the network. It is valid for 3 days and you can dial *406*6# to buy it.
  • ii.) N500 for 1.5GB: On other call plans, you will get less than 1GB for this amount. Buy this plan by dialing *406*2# and enjoy it for 7 days.

Category 2: Instagram / TikTok Plan

  • iii.) N100 for 350MB: You must be on Pulse to buy this plan only that it is only valid for 24 hours (you can check the second offer). Text INSTD1 to 131 to purchase.
  • iv.) N200 for 1GB: This is what most people will subscribe to not because they can’t exhaust it fast but because of its 7 days validity period. Text INSTD2 to 131 to buy.

Category 3: Nightlife Bundles

This particular plan has saved a lot of lives out there. I used this plan a lot during those years at the University. It is a night plan that allows you to browse and download at a much cheaper price. MTN night plan is valid between 11 pm to 6 am after which the remaining data will be wiped out.

  • v.) N25 for 250MB: This is the cheapest of the pack and you can buy as much as 2GB. This means you will have to buy it up to 8 times. If you need that much, you should just go for the second offer which you will buy just 4 times for the same value. Text NT1 to 131 to buy.
  • vi.) N50 for 500MB: Just like the above plan, a fair usage policy of 2GB applies. Text NT2 to 131 to subscribe to it.

3.) MTN Xtra Data

Xtra Data is a feature of MTN XtraValue plan. It gives you more data than airtime. Below is a table that contains the details of its bundle price, data benefits, and how to buy them. You can always visit my full write-up about the plan to learn more about it.

MTN Tariff Plan for Calls

1.) MTN Pulse

I have published about three (3) posts on this call plan alone on this blog. You can read them to know everything you need to know. Here, I will focus on this tariff part of the plan as related to call rate and Talktime.

You will be charged 27 kobo for every second of call you make for the first 60 seconds of the day and the pulse call rate will drop to 11.26 kobo for every second. The countdown starts again at 12 AM of every day.

Many people will see that and say, wow the call rate is very low after the first minute but let’s do some calculations, and let’s be sure what it translates to in Talktime.

First, I will convert the call rates to Naira per minute and from there, I will calculate the Talktime for each call rate and use them to calculate the total Talktime.

  • 27 kobo per second to Naira per minute = 27 x 60 / 100 = 1620 / 100 = 16.2 Naira per minute.
  • 11.26 kobo per second to Naira per minute = 11.26 x 60 / 100 = 675.6 / 100 = 6.756 Naira per minute.

So, let’s assume that you recharge 100 Naira airtime and you were able to exhaust it in a day, how long will it take you to use it while calling any local number in Nigeria? I will do the same calculation for 200 and 500 Naira airtime recharge.

For N100 Credit

  • The first 60 seconds cost 15.36 Naira, and the remaining airtime will be; 100 – 16.2 = 83.8 Naira
  • After that, the call rate changes to 6.756 Naira per minute. Means Talktime = 83.8 / 6.756 = 12.40 minutes
  • Total call duration = 1 minute + 12.53 minutes = 13 minutes 24 seconds.

For N200 Credit

  • First 60 seconds is 15.36 Naira and you will be left with; 200 – 16.2 = 183.8 Naira
  • Talktime for the rest of the day = 183.8 / 6.756 = 27.21 minutes
  • Total call duration for N200 Airtime = First 1 minute + 27.21 minutes = 28 minutes 12 seconds.

For N500 Credit

  • The first minute cost you 15.36 Naira and we have to deduct it from the airtime giving a remainder of 484.64 Naira
  • The Talktime for the remaining airtime is 483.8 / 6.756 = 71.61 minutes
  • Total call duration for 500 Credit = first 1 minute + 71.61 minutes = 72 minutes 37 seconds.

Pulse is a good plan for making calls to all networks that operate in Nigeria which include Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile.

There are other benefits of using the MTN Pulse tariff plan and you can migrate to the plan by sending 406 to 131.

2.) MTN Tru Talk

This is another great call plan for local calls that you might want to consider.

True talk call rate is 11.26 kobo per second but there is a daily access fee of 7.17 Naira. But if you have less than N7.17 credit, the call rate becomes 15.36 kobo per second.

I will now do the same thing I did above with pulse by first converting the call rate to Naira per minute and using that to calculate the talk time.

11.26 kobo per second to Naira per minute = 11.26 x 60 / 100 = 675.6 / 100 = 6.756 Naira per minute.

  • Talktime for 100 Naira recharge = 100 – 7.17 = 92.83 / 6.756 = 13 minutes 44 seconds.
  • Talktime for 200 Naira recharge = 200 – 7.17 = 192.83 / 6.756 = 28 minutes 32 seconds
  • Talktime for 500 Naira recharge = 500 – 7.17 = 492.83 / 6.756 = 72 minutes 57 seconds

This is my second plan for making calls among the local networks in Nigeria. Text TT to 131 to migrate. You should check my write-up about MTN Tru Talk to know even more about this call plan.

3.) MTN Xtra Talk

This is one of the two features of MTN Xtravalue call plan. The other one is Xtra data. While Xtra talk gives you more airtime than data, Xtra data gives you more data than airtime. I will focus on the Xtra talk here.

Xtra Talk call rate is 27 Naira/min for local calls while international calls are at 54 Naira/min. Roaming with (2000 Naira and above bundles) is at 630 Naira per minute for outgoing calls and 420 Naira per minute for incoming calls.

While in Nigeria, there are only 10 international countries (listed below) you can call at the rate stated above. If not, you will be charged at the standard international rate.

  • South Korea
  • China
  • Ireland
  • Canada
  • India
  • Malaysia
  • United States
  • Denmark
  • Norway
  • Romania

However, if you are not in Nigeria and on roaming, below are the eligible countries you can call at the call rate stated above:

  • China
  • France
  • Cameroon
  • Uganda
  • Rwanda
  • Sudan
  • United Kingdom
  • Benin Republic
  • South Africa
  • Ghana
  • Kenya
  • Mexico
  • Sweden
  • Malta
  • Czech Republic
  • Iran
  • Switzerland
  • Greece
  • Australia
  • Portugal
  • Austria
  • Italy
  • Germany
  • Belgium
  • Netherlands
  • Turkey
  • Canada
  • Senegal
  • Saudi Arabia
  • USA
  • United Republic of Tanzania
  • Hong Kong
  • Hungary
  • Poland
  • Cote d’Ivoire
  • Spain
  • Romania
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus
  • New Zealand
  • Ireland

To migrate to Xtra talk, you have to buy one of the available bundles and you can do that by following the steps below;

  • Dial *131*2#
  • Enter 1 to buy the Xtra talk bundle
  • Select the plan you want
  • Reply with 1 if you will like to auto-renew and 2 for a one-off purchase
  • Confirm the purchase.

Xtra talk is the top mtn call plan for international calls.

4.) MTN Xtra Special

This is another great plan for international calls.

Xtra Special has a call rate of 13.33 kobo/sec for both local and international calls. But the international calls are only to 11 countries which are India, Norway, The US, Canada, The UK, Denmark, China, South Korea, Malaysia, Ireland, and Romania.

So, as usual, below is the conversion of the rate to Naira per minute and then the Talktime calculation.

15.36 kobo per second to Naira per minute = 13.33 x 60 / 100 = 799.8 / 100 = 7.998 N/min.

  • Talktime for 100 Naira airtime = 100 / 7.998 = 12 minutes and 30 seconds
  • Call Duration for 200 Naira credit = 200 / 7.998 = 25 minutes
  • Talk Time for 500 Naira Airtime = 500 / 7.998 = 62 minutes and 31 seconds.

To migrate to MTN XtraSpecial, text 408 to 131 as an SMS.

Final Thought on mtn tariff plans

Because of the night plan offer, I personally consider Pulse to be the most valuable mtn tariff for data.

However, if you want both data and airtime benefits, you should consider Xtra data since that is what it was designed to give you.

To be honest, yafun yafun would have been my pick if you can enjoy a 100% data bonus forever. But you can’t, it is only for 4 months and you will be auto-migrated out to beta talk after 6 months.

Except you intend to keep buying a new sim every 6 months, the offer isn’t something that will last for that long.

For local calls, I personally will go for mtn pulse and if you are the type that knows you will frequently have to make international calls, it is better to go for Xtra talk.

It is worth mentioning that mtn yafun yafun is also one of the top tariff plans for making calls to any local numbers such as other mtn numbers, Glo, Airtel, and 9mobile with a Talktime of 13 minutes and 13 seconds for airtime of 100 Naira.

But the reason I didn’t include it on the list is that it is sort of a promotional offer for new mtn lines/users and you will eventually be auto-migrated out of it after some months.
